INITIATIVE: SOCIAL MEDIA BEHAVIOR & REAL-WORLD CONSEQUENCES
Social Media Use Preceding Real-World Violence

Increasingly, social media plays a significant role in amplifying and accelerating real-world violence. Individuals use Facebook, Twitter and other social media outlets to share violent intentions, argue, and display troubling behavior, drastically increasing the likelihood of real-world violence—which often turns deadly.

To draw attention to this growing problem, the Crime Commission compiled a list of recent violent incidents, including murders, shootings, and stabbings, where social media played a critical role in amplifying conflict and foreshadowing violence.

There are undoubtedly, however, far more cases than catalogued so far and presented here by the Crime Commission. It is our aim to use this list as a way to not only track these incidents in order to prevent further social media-fueled violence—but also to encourage law enforcement and others to recognize and report such incidents, which we believe are woefully and dangerously underreported.

In order to prevent online content from escalating into violence we must view troubling social media posts and exchanges as warning signs and develop effective interventions that meet individuals in this new space of conflict. That is why the Crime Commission, working with New York University, developed the E-Responder program, which we launched in February 2016 with community partners.

Our research shows that community-centered intervention on social media is necessary to prevent violence. Therefore, we are working with credible community members with valuable local knowledge and who have the expertise to accurately read warning signs and intervene the most effectively before violence happens.

We are continually adding to this list. If you would like to submit an incident for addition, please contact Roberta Liggett at liggett@caasny.com
